So you feel overlooked. You feel that other don’t see what you know to be inherently true… that there is something on the inside that is meant for greatness. Why else would you have these big dreams, goals and ambitions? You have a fire on the inside with something to prove.

But where do you go from there?

Do you just work really hard and hope that everything turns out right? Do you complain that it’s not fair and hope that that works?

Before we take action on anything, we must make an internal shift first. The first thing that must happen is we must shift our mindset into a place that will allow us to be successful.

If we begin to take action without a plan, our emotions will take us on a wild journey with no clear destination in sight. We will take actions based on emotions, which if we are honest, doesn’t have the best track record.

First Mindset Shift: React vs Respond

What’s the difference you might ask?

The best way I try to explain it in a simple way is our reaction is our first impulse decision. Often times these decisions are based in emotions, which could be a good or a bad thing. If you stumble across a bear in the wild, your first instinct and reaction might be to run out of fear. While I would want to get away myself, experts say the worst thing you can do is run. While the emotion of fear is telling you something very important, we must not let it make the decision on what action we take.

Responding is often times, making decisions regardless of how we feel about it. It’s the decision that is made because it is the right thing to do. We face this first thing every day when our alarm goes off. For most, the reaction is to hit the alarm. On the other hand, many of the highest achievers tell you to never hit the snooze button. They tell you to go against what you are feeling like doing, and to do the right thing… which in this situation is to get up.

This is what sports teams do all the time at practice. They practice as many situations as possible and create a plan based on what comes their way. There is a designated planned response as a team, rather than a bunch of athletes reacting and doing whatever they feel like doing in the moment.

The best teams often are the ones where they “know” what their teammates are thinking. They know where they are going to be on the field or what decision they will make. How? Because they planned it and practiced it.

So if you feel overlooked… we must plan out your response.

It might feel good to get mad, blame others, and to complain that it’s not fair… but none of that is helping you be seen. We must decide how we are going to respond to the challenges.

And not just THIS challenge. There WILL be more. How are you going to respond? Are you going to view them as something that is happening TO you… or a blessing that is happening FOR you?

Second Mindset Shift: Get a Little Unrealistic

Goals, Goals, Goals. Now, don’t get me wrong, I am all for a good SMART goal.
Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time Based.

I think they have immense value, but I also have seen them diminish far to many dreams.

We get hung up on making our goals Realistic. My first question is, who says it has to be realistic?

The people who are doing amazing and world changing things aren’t being realistic. They are fundamentally trying to do things that aren’t real or haven’t been possible yet. You have privately funded companies building rockets to go to Mars. You have companies that can have something you purchase online to your doorstep by the end of the day.

All things that 20 years ago would be considered unrealistic.
“Oh but they are different”  Why? Who gets to say who can dream BIG and who can’t?

I found in college it was amazing how much I could get done the night before a test. It was amazing how much I could study, learn and get done when I felt a little uncomfortable.

I think the Realistic part of our goals allow us to stay comfortable. I want to urge you to make a goal that is a little audacious and makes you a little uncomfortable. Share it with someone so they can keep you accountable. If it makes you uncomfortable, it will spur you to more action, and you will accomplish more than when you don’t have to push yourself.

You are already uncomfortable with the idea that you are being overlooked… so let’s make our goals a little uncomfortable and shoot for something big!

Mindset Shift 3: Prove Them Right

But wait… they are the ones who are overlooking me? You want me to prove them right?

Nope…
I want you to prove the people who believe in you right.

Look around you. Who are the ones in your corner, pushing you, pulling you, listening to you, caring for you in these moments.

They are the ones who believe in you.
Prove THEM right.

Every once in a while, it’s nice to go to that dark place and fuel that fire, remembering those you want to prove wrong. Been there, done that, and can be very effective if used properly!

BUT, it is draining if that is the only energy you draw on.

There are reasons those around you believe in you. Tap into that energy and begin using that as energy to push and grow from.
That little bit of revenge can feel good in the moment, but man it feels so much better to make those you love proud.

Go out today and make them proud!

Wrap Up

Being overlooked is as much mental as it is physical. A lot of times we can’t control all the physical aspects of why we have been overlooked, but we can control our attitude, effort and mindset.

So before you take any action, let’s make that plan, and commit to getting our minds right first!

Then it’s time to put the work in while nobody is watching. Next time, you’ll be ready and they won’t be able to look away.
